Everything you need to know about Brocade

Brocade is a class of richly decorative shuttle-woven fabrics that are typically woven on a draw loom with a weft and warp technique. It gives the appearance that the weave was actually embroidered on and creates an amazing 3D effect. Brocade is often used for evening wear and formal clothing.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Brocade was one of the few luxury fabrics worn by nobility. Throughout the ages Brocade has remained a highly desirable fabric and is constantly in demand due to its versatility. Some of the more luxury fashion houses frequently use this fabric particularly for evening coats and dresses.

Please see this beautiful piece from Dolce and Gabbana below as an example:

We love this dress for it's classic shape. The cinched waist and mini skirt accentuates the woman’s figure although it would still look fabulous if the skirt fell to the knee due to it’s a-line cut. Wear with evening sandals or as above with skinny jeans more of a day time look.

Stefano and Domenico’s collection was primarily made from Brocade. This fabric can be kept simple in it’s original design or it can be adorned with applique and beading over the top. Either option is elegant because Brocade is very luxurious in the first place.

An example of embellishing this material is illustrated below (again by Dolce and Gabbana).

This Brocade has been adorned with applique corded lace and silk to make the quirky animals and leaves. It’s over sized shape remains fashion forward but the designers have put a twist to the classic material. Join this trend with us and see our recommendations below!

Blumarine has chosen for this season’s Brocade to be embellished with fur trimming. The shimmer of the silk in the fabric is simply divine and to achieve this rigid, malleable effect only Brocade can be used.
